Am I covered while traveling outside Ontario?
If you travel outside Ontario while you are a member of UHIP, you will have to pay for any medical services you receive and send original receipts with a claim form to the UHIP insurer for payment.
If you travel outside Canada, UHIP will pay only for medically necessary emergency expenses, the same as OHIP. UHIP benefits will change anytime OHIP benefits change. Coverage is very limited and the purchase of additional health insurance when you leave Canada is strongly recommended. Currently, UHIP pays for:
- emergency hospital outpatient services, with the exception of dialysis, to a maximum of $50 (Canadian) for all out-patient services provided on any one day
- dialysis treatment, up to $210 (Canadian) per day
- emergency in-patient hospitalization, limited to $400 (Canadian) a day for complex hospital care such as surgery or coronary, neonatal, paediatric, or intensive care and up to $200 for less-intensive medical care
- emergency care from a physician or other eligible health care provider, to the amount billed or the cost of the same physician service in Ontario, whichever is less
- repatriation to Ontario, at the discretion of the UHIP insurer (to another hospital of the UHIP insurer’s choice, with 48 hours’ notice, if the transfer is approved by the attending physician)
If you travel outside the Province, UHIP will pay for medical expenses, the same as if you were in Ontario.
